MYOFASCIAL TRIGGER POINTS – HANDS ON THERAPY
Myofascial Pain Syndrome has been increasing dramatically in recent years. Clinically speaking, patients with cervical myofascial pain syndrome have a very high recurrence rate. In a recent study by Hou et al. 2002, one hundred and nineteen subjects with palpable active myofascial trigger points in the upper Trapezius muscle underwent a randomized controlled trial to determine the effectiveness of Ischemic Compression Therapy. This study results show that there was a 33% improvement in the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) in patients that received Ischemic Compression following a moist hot pack and active range of motion, compared with a 16% improvement in the VAS in patient that received hot pack and active range of motion alone. Treatment times utilizing a pain tolerance threshold pressure require only 30 seconds and were shown to provide immediate pain relief and reduction of the myofascial trigger point sensitivity.
